The Anna Maria Beach Resort

The History of the Anna Maria Beach Resort: From Blue Water Beach Club to Today

Anna Maria Island has always looked like it belonged in a prior era, despite the major expansion in the 20s and 30s after the Cortez Bridge connected it to the mainland. It has always had an authentic innocence and magic from a world of yesteryear.

And in many ways, this historic ambiance still stands today and permeates throughout the island, as a nod to a more laid-back time in Florida. Anna Maria Island is the most authentic spot on Florida’s Gulf coast to experience this unique Old Florida charm.

The Anna Maria Beach Resort (formerly the Blue Water Beach Club) in Holmes Beach has always embodied everything about that charm, both before and after its recent renovation.

Despite being in a prime beachfront location, the Blue Water Beach Club was in need of a major tonal shift. The décor and amenities associated with Old Florida motel-hopping and simple lodging aesthetics had to be reworked and revamped.

The renovation took the foundation of the motel and turned it from a fun novelty motel to a higher-end luxury wonder. Now, the hotel sets a new standard for accommodations on Anna Maria and offers accessible luxury vacationing in the heart of Holmes Beach in an unrivaled location.

The Original Blue Water Beach Club

Although the latest pictures of the new luxury style motel are impressive to many of our viewers, they need to be taken into context. Prior to the major overhaul in 2018, the motel was firmly “Old Florida” in both spirit and design.

The simple aesthetic included a basic and approachable color and style on nearly every surface. The small square pool was surrounded by all white. The building was almost entirely white, with some small color dashes here and there. Features were limited to some basic offerings, such as A/C, shuffleboard, and kitchenettes.

These are all rather standard features, hardly innovating the idea of luxury along the Gulf coast. But a massive renovation in 2018 took the basic foundation and location of the motel and gave it new life as the Anna Maria Beach Resort.

Same Layout, Brand New Elegance

With clean lines, cozy and bright colors, this is a sharp and modern new face for the classic Anna Maria accommodations on the water. The designers decided to keep the basic framework intact. Generally, the floor plans and actual construction layout of the property is the same as it was. The footprint is similar, which helps retain that warm family feeling from Old Florida.

But, everything else was completely transformed. The new and lovely California Coastal design embodies a light and breezy energizing feeling while staying in a prime beachfront spot on the coast.

The plumbing, electrical, and air conditioning systems have been removed and updated or replaced entirely. A brand new oversized pool was installed as the centerpiece of the resort surrounded by rejuvenating lush tropical landscaping and a spacious hot tub.

Other updates included new hardwood floors, new appliances, fixtures, and a brand-new pitched roof for gorgeous vaulted ceilings on the second floor. Private patios and balconies offer gorgeous views of the pool area or Gulf that are postcard-worthy.

It is all a drastic reinvention of the original design and something long needed from this cozy Gulf-side escape. It has become a quintessential destination for weddings, group events, and more.

Guest enjoy the feeling of a private hotel with features including cabana rentals, beach chairs, and access to a convenient trolley stop on-site, all help make your AMI vacation even better.

What has eternally remained the same is the tranquil Gulf and the hospitality and welcoming atmosphere that has defined Anna Maria Island history. The developers took what worked with the original motel and helped evolve it into a sensational tropical paradise.

The southern charm is retained while luxury amenities and a boldly contemporary design is added. This is a new kind of place to stay- one that embraces the relaxation of Old Florida with all the charms and attractions of a luxury resort on the Gulf.
